Beech

Beech's close grain makes it strong and very hardwearing.
So often used in kitchens on worktops and workbenches because it is so tough.
Kitchen utensils and chopping boards and even butchers blocks are often made from beech due to its self-healing properties. It's a favourite for making chairs too.

It usually has a warm honey/sandy tone, with some grain patterning, but not too busy.

Sometimes is 'spalted' which means it has essentially started to rot whilst wet. If caught early enough this can provides some really interesting colouring and pattern whilst keeping its strength.

It takes a range of finishes well, bringing out it's colour and grain.

Beech is plentiful in Wales, and is often blown over in storms. We air dry ours and condition it in a Solar Kiln.
